Westlake Mathematicians Make Their Mark Nationally!

JMC Distinction and Top 30

Some maths problems take a little extra thinking. Others really put your brain through its paces! And our Westlake mathematicians were more than ready for the challenge.

In March, 61 students from Years 9–12 took part in the first round of the University of Otago Junior Mathematics Competition, testing their problem-solving skills against students from across New Zealand.

Of those, 23 qualified for Round 2 in May, with some excellent results to follow. Across the competition, 24 students earned Merit awards and eight achieved Distinctions.

A special congratulations goes to Rosa Zhao (Year 12), who finished among the top 30 students nationally in her year group!

Congratulations also to our Distinction recipients:

  • Year 9: Arfa Batool, Jessica He, Elly Li and Sinya Xia
  • Year 10: Valie Nguyen and Sebeen Sim
  • Year 12: Christine Lu and Fatima Noor

Well done to all 61 students who took part. It’s great to see so many of our girls willing to tackle a challenge, think outside the box and give those tricky problems a go!
