Kia ora parents and caregivers,

We are now at the end of week six, with just four weeks left until the end of Term one. The improved weather has been welcomed, especially by our sports teams and the rescheduled Athletics Day (for competitors only) went ahead on Tuesday this week.

We held our Year 9 Tabloid Sports Day on March 1st and it was great to see our new students working positively together with our Year 13 leaders helping to run activities.

We also welcomed new and existing Māori ākonga and whānau to our first Whānau Hui evening on 1 March. It was a great evening, meeting so many whanau and celebrating the success of their students. We are delighted that this year, for the first time, we have more students learning Te Reo Māori than any other language. We are looking forward to hosting our first Pasifika Fono evening next Wednesday.

At the end of February, we held our Clubs Expo, which is an opportunity for students sign up to one or more of our 75 Clubs and Activities on offer. Joining a club is a great way for students to get involved in activities outside the classroom, discover a new passion and make new like-minded friends.

For Year 13 students and parents we are hosting a Tertiary night on 21st March at the Events Centre. This is an important opportunity to learn more about the programmes on offer at our Universities, and to understand the application process. On Thursday 23 March we will be hosting Year 11 Parents to a NCEA evening where we will explain the changes to the NCEA Level 1 qualification system and what that will mean for the students who are part of the transition between the two systems.

We have been advised by the PPTA that secondary school teachers will be taking industrial action on Thursday March 16th. This is as a result of a lack of agreement being reached in their negotiations with the Government and with many of our teachers involved, we will be unable to open for instruction. You would have received an email about this and if you require supervision for your child on Thursday March 16 please contact their Dean to arrange this.

Below is a list of upcoming key events, and you will receive further communication about these.

Have a lovely weekend.

Jane Stanley
Principal

Auckland Rowing Championships

After a long summer of work, the Westlake Girls rowing squad began their competitive racing season at the Auckland Rowing Championships (Head of Harbour) on Saturday 4th of March. With excellent on water conditions the squad performed extremely well, earning six first, five second & three third place finishes.

Westlake Girls medalled in all three of the premier sweeping events on the program – the girls U182- (bronze), 184+ (gold) and U18 8+ (silver).  Our squad also managed to earn first place finishes in 4 of 5 four oar events on the program. Claiming gold in the girls U154+, U164+, U184+ and U18 Novice 4+

Gu178+ on their way to a Silver Medal

The highlight for the day was of course a tightly fought battle in the girls u188+. Our crew ably lead by coxswain Tessa Guthrie finished second in a tight race between Westlake Girls &  Baradene College, with the race being so close not even the crew themselves knew where they had finished until the official result was provided. This marks the fifth consecutive year Westlake Girls has medalled in the Gu18 8+ at Auckland Championships. Making us the only school to medal in the event every year of the 5 past season and marking our longest streak of success in the event.

The squad now turns their attention to North Island Secondary Schools and Maadi Cup held in March at Lake Karapiro.

Young Enterprise Kickstart event

Our Year 13 Business Studies students participated in the annual Young Enterprise event, Kickstart Friday the 17th of February at the AUT North Campus. It was a fabulous day that gave students a great overview of the opportunities, resources and competition that will follow in the year ahead.

Students took part in team exercises that drive the students into increasing communication and encourages students to take leadership and work together as a team. It was also an opportunity for students to meet other budding Young Enterprise students from other school to exchange ideas and connect with their local Regional Coordinator.

Following the Kickstart event, the young entrepreneurs will continue to work on bringing their business and products to life. The teams are now working towards being in the top six teams who will compete at the Regional Finals in October, pitching their ideas/products to a panel of judges to represent Auckland at the National Final in Wellington at the end of the year.

We look forward to seeing what business ideas our students come up with over the coming weeks.

Japanese Professor Visit

When both myself and others made videos for the Ko Wai Au project, I don’t think we could have dreamed that it would have accomplished the things that it did. That, somewhere in Osaka, a professor was watching the videos we made on our bedroom floors with books propping up our phones to film (or at least, that was the case for me).

Professor Hiroko Nakamura from Osaka International University visited our school during week three of this term, interviewing a number of students involved in the ‘Ko Wai Au- Who am I?’  project throughout her three days with us. The research she was doing on the project was related to an academic paper about New Zealand and its diversity and inclusionism, especially in the wake of the 2019 Christchurch mosque terror attacks. We were asked questions around what we aimed to achieve by making the 16 videos and some of the challenges we faced. Videos were made by students about their cultural and/or religious identity.

I’m sure that both myself, others involved in the Ko Wai Au project, and the staff and students of Westlake Girls High School wish her all the best with her paper, and hope that like the Ko Wai Au project, it spreads a message of inclusivity and acceptance around not just New Zealand, but the globe.

Celebrating International Women’s Day

Global engineering company Norman Disney & Young, organised a special event in celebration of International Women’s Day 2023. They featured a hybrid panel discussion with women panellists from across Australia and New Zealand who were sharing their inspirational stories. Two of our former Westlake students (Larissa Ramos & Samara Kattan) who are studying Engineering, are doing an internship at NDY, and are loving it.

Barbara Scholten, our Student Business Liaison, took two Westlake students, Zara Shreyoshi ( year 13) and Nour Kalache (year 12), who are interested in becoming engineers.

Nour Kalache said “Going to NDY was a wonderful experience and I’d love to go again. All the staff members and guests were incredibly kind and great to talk to, and hearing their advice and assurances about engineering was an informative and even reassuring experience, especially when I was promised that high school physics wasn’t as big a problem past high school as I thought it would be. The presentation itself was very informative and it was inspiring to see so many women succeeding in the field I want to work towards. I was nervous beforehand and thought it would be harder talking to a group of strangers, but all the people there were comfortable to talk to and inspired me to continue building on my skills and knowledge to get into the engineering field.”

Update from the School Board

Having been re-elected as Presiding Member of the Westlake Girls High School Board by my board colleagues at our first meeting, held on Tuesday 28th February, I’m delighted to provide our first board report for 2023.

I’m privileged to lead a strong Board, which is dedicated to ensuring Westlake Girls continues to offer a dynamic and stimulating learning environment, that engages our students and inspires their personal growth – academically and through our extensive extra-curricular programme (75 extra-curricular clubs and activities and 43 sports codes).

Our Vision: Confident, robust, optimistic, proud citizens of Aotearoa New Zealand, equipped for global success. The role our school Board plays in realising this vision is a vital one. We are responsible for the school’s performance and ensuring that all legal requirements are met.

Here are a few of the key agenda topics covered at our meeting.

Academic Excellence

The Board was presented with WGHS’s 2022 academic results. Our unique position as an all-girls school means we have, with many years of research, developed a deep understanding of how young women learn and interact. This allows us to tailor our teaching to maximise the potential for our students to succeed.

We know parents sometimes compare our teaching methods to the boys school up the road – especially our online learning approach during lockdown. However, building capability in our wāhine is something we are proving to do with an exceptionally high degree of success. Our results speak for themselves – our 2022 NCEA results exceeded the national average for decile 9 schools at all levels. Of particular note was the achievement of our Māori students, aligned with the whole school cohort at Level 3 and particularly Level 2 where the Māori cohort results were higher than the whole Year 12 cohort.

The number of NZQA Scholarships achieved were lower this year and there was discussion around the drop in the number of students who sat these exams and possible reasons why. However, Westlake Girls results were the second highest achieving Girls School and 12th overall out of over 300 secondary schools for 2022. The academic targets for 2023 included the numeracy and Literacy corequisites at Year 10.

52 scholarships awarded to 33 students placed us in the top 12 schools in New Zealand out of over 300 Secondary schools and the second among all Girls Schools. This result was a little lower this year due to a much smaller number of students attempting these exams. We know this is a space our students can increase their achievements in, and it’s important that we work together to encourage them to step out of their comfort zone – in line with their male counterparts. Research shows the difference between male and female risk-taking is marked, and we will continue to strengthen and boost our students’ confidence levels in this area.

We are grateful to our teaching staff for their continued commitment to our school and the resulting successes of our students.

The 2022 Analysis of Variance, discussed at our meeting, addressed our results. The Board monitors and evaluates this student learning and achievement data against the 2022 Annual Plan, in order to set ongoing targets and priorities. These aren’t just numbers on a page – the knowledge of individual students and their learning requirements is impressive. The Board is always looking for ways to support staff and students to achieve to their potential, and school management is tasked to provide the board with good data to achieve this.

Strategic Plan, Annual Plan & Targets

The Strategic Plan 2022-2025, along with the 2023 Annual Plan and goals and targets for 2023 was presented for Board approval prior to submission to the MOE.

NZ curriculum refresh and NCEA changes

The NZ curriculum refresh and NCEA changes taking place 2022-2026 were discussed. Information about these changes for students during the transition process, is currently being provided to those affected.

2023 Budget

The Board approved the final budget for 2023, as overseers of the management of staff, property, curriculum and administration; and having responsibility for the finances of the school. The Board ensures that the budget allocates government and local funding appropriately to develop a learning environment that meets the needs of all students. The budget is aligned to the school’s Strategic Plan goals and targets and is monitored at each Board meeting. We are very grateful to those families who have paid their school donation so that we can continue to provide the standard of education that we have come to expect from WGHS. With 31 March approaching, now is the perfect time to make sure you can claim your tax rebate on your 2023 school donation; alternatively you may choose to donate your rebate to the school as well via Supergenerous which has replaced TaxGift.

Reporting

Principal Jane Stanley reported on the school’s response to the flooding and cylone events, along with updates on aspects such as property, health and safety, cultural wellbeing and International students. As usual, at the start of the year, there were several legislative governance and operational requirements to review and approve.

Westlake Girls has a strong Board of eight actively engaged members providing a valuable and complementary skillset. This includes five elected parent members, the Principal, one elected staff representative; and one elected student representative. However, we are interested in hearing from anyone with legal and quantity surveying expertise that would be willing to assist the board on an ad hoc basis.

Our Board meetings are held in public, and you are welcome to attend. Meeting dates are on the WGHS website, please contact Marie McKerrow, Principal’s PA, for further information.

NCEA Scholarship classes

With the 2023 academic year having started we are now turning our gaze to the opportunities open to our students. One of the many ways that our students can challenge themselves and their learning is through opting into NCEA Scholarship classes.

Scholarship is a commitment beyond the expected classroom studies for our students and culminates in a final assessment. Assessment may take the form of a report or presentation, or an examination depending on the subject(s) that a student is enrolled in.

NCEA Scholarship classes provide learning beyond that taught in the Level 3 classroom and promote the skills of critical things and analysis, evaluation, formation of complex judgements and conclusions, integration and synthesis of knowledge and texts, abstract thinking, and problem solving. These classes, and the subsequent assessments, set our students up to explore their passions and build confidence in moving forward with their academic careers.

We have introduced Scholarship to students at a recent Level 2 and 3 assembly and published a timetable of classes and workshops enabling students to take part. Students have expressed their interest by joining our Scholarship 2023 classroom where the timetable is published for them.

There are a number of benefits for students who take up the challenge of sitting Scholarship in a subject including personal growth. At Westlake Girls one of our strategic goals is to support students in their personal growth, to provide them with opportunities to grow as learners and as individuals. Alongside this benefit students who attain Scholarship achieve a monetary award that contributes towards their university fees at any New Zealand university. Through enrolling and completing a Scholarship subject students are also showing a willingness to learn and this is a positive attribute for those wanting to attend university.

Westlake Girls has a dedicated and enthusiastic team of Scholarship teachers who are committed to providing our students with the knowledge and support that they need. We also have some exceptional students who we believe have the potential to be some of the top achieving scholars in New Zealand and we would love your support in helping them to achieve this.

Northcote Road Works from 13 March

Auckland Transport have advised from 13 March they will be doing works on Northcote Rd, The Avenue, Takapuna Normal Intermediate Intersection, both slip lanes on the Taharoto Road / Northcote Road intersection. Work is expected to take 5 weeks of work during day hours and about another 5 of overnight work.

They will use a mix of temporary traffic signs, lane shifts and a lower speed limit. They do this to keep traffic moving and keep people who use the roads and footpaths safe. Traffic controllers will help to manage vehicle and pedestrian access. Please follow all signs, light signals and traffic directions. You’ll need to reduce your speed when you’re driving through the area.

Exploring health issues

Year 13 Health students have started off their year exploring different health issues such as Breast Cancer and Mental Health (Depression & Anxiety). This links in with their assessment where they evaluate health practices currently used in New Zealand and around the world. Students have been looking into western scientific medicine, traditional & cultural medicine, and complementary & alternative medicine. Year 13 Health students from Westlake Girls, Glenfield College and Carmel College were involved in a half day workshop on Tuesday 28th February. At the workshop students got to experience and develop their understanding around Reiki, Yoga, Acupuncture, Aromatherapy, Reflexology and Counselling. We also hosted a General Practitioner who provided insight on what they are able to provide to patients. Many of these treatments our students had no prior knowledge of, so this experience has been highly memorable.

Tabloid Sports Day

On Wednesday 1st March we held Tabloid Sports for our Year 9 students. It was a fantastic bluebird day with plenty of house spirit and fun times. There were 4 activities that each form class rotated around and they gained points as they participated which contributed to their overall house.  Tug of war was the favourite activity with enthusiastic house chants finishing off the hour. A big thank you to our senior leaders for stepping up and making this day possible.

Results: 1st  – Hauraki, 2nd – Onewa, 3rd – Pupuke, 4th – Akoranga, 5th –  Wairau. The form class with the most overall points went to 9HBL.
