Kia ora Parents and Caregivers,

It has been a busy couple of weeks as we head towards the end of the school year, and a time when our students’ efforts are realised and rewarded.

At our Special Assembly on Monday, we were delighted to announce our 2023 Prefects, including Head Prefect Isabella Drummond and the Deputy Head Prefect Dinithi Liyanage.  I’m very much looking forward to working with these two outstanding students next year, along with the rest of the Prefect team.

I want to thank our outgoing Prefect team, led by Head Prefect Ivy Mitchell and Deputy Head Prefect Ella Dorward. All our Prefects made a significant contribution to our school, encouraging other students and demonstrating their leadership skills.

On Wednesday 2nd November we celebrated the leadership and contribution of Senior students with a Special Awards Ceremony.

Later that evening saw the Event Centre full once again as we held our Senior Academic Prize-Giving joined by parents and whānau to celebrate our students’ success.

On Thursday the Year 13 students enjoyed their Leaver’s Afternoon Tea outside and in the foyer of the Event Centre, with friends and family. It is a special time as they mark the end of their time at Westlake Girls and transition to life beyond secondary school as proud citizens of Aotearoa New Zealand.

NCEA exams started this week for all our Seniors, and I wish all our students the very best for these important assessments.

Parents Forum

The Parents Forum raises money for the Student Welfare Fund which supports students and their families during difficult financial times. The main income is through the Second Hand Uniform shop which was founded in 2017. Over the last decade, we were able to assist many students and families with food, fees, stationary and uniform items. This support was very much appreciated, especially during covid times. On Saturday the 10th of December we are holding our yearly big uniform sale in the gym 3 (main gym), more information about this will follow in an email next week.

At the end of each year, we organise the staff morning tea to celebrate WGHS staff. We would like to thank all the parents/caregivers who helped make the staff morning tea a success, it was simply amazing. Thank you so much so for your delicious dishes, for the amazing gifts and to all the helpers.

As some of you already know, I am stepping down as Chairperson of the Parents Forum. I started as Chair of the PTA at WBHS in 2008, and came to WGHS in 2011. It has been a privilege to have been in this role for more than a decade and to have been able to help so many students. Also, a big thank you to Kim Ferguson who has been by my side for many years. Setting up the Second Hand Uniform Shop has been our biggest achievement to date and has helped us raise tens of thousands of dollars for the Welfare fund.

We will be leaving the Second Hand Uniform Shop in very capable hands within the next two months. The new Chairperson is Tracey Smith, current Chair of the PTA WBHS, and joining her will be MJ van Rhiemen. Thank you so much Tracey and MJ for putting your hands up to continue the Second Hand Uniform Shop. I am sure that under your leadership, the shop will expand and will see an increase of funds to support more and more students in the future.

Thank you again so much.

Cool physics demonstrations

On Friday 28 October,  Dr Daniel Schumayer and Assistant Research Fellow Anna Tarr, from the University of Otago, visited our Year 13 Physics classes to liven up our Physics Exam revision with a few cool physics demonstrations.

Blow-torch sound wave tubes and superconductor levitation were definitely fan favourites!

We are grateful to Daniel and Anna for stopping by and sharing their expertise with us!

National Youth Band 2023 welcomes Emily Sullivan

Congratulations to Year 11 student Emily Sullivan, who has been accepted as a member of the National Youth Band for 2023. This is the Brass Band Association’s premier youth ensemble with an age of limit of under 23 years. It consists of players who are either professional musicians, with the NZ Army Band or studying music at University. Although Emily was invited to attend last year’s NYBB as a development player, her successful audition and selection as a full member has means that she will be one of the youngest in the band. The band will assemble and tour the upper South Island in January 2023.

The name Aotango combines ‘ao’, meaning ‘world’ in te reo Māori, with ‘tango’ – signifying their seamless fusion of world music and tango, presented alongside an eclectic mix of styles and genres. Art and Fashion showcase

On Wednesday 26 October the Art and Technology departments held their much anticipated showcase.  This was the first showcase since 2018 and was the culmination of a year of effort by all of our students.

The event was a great success.  Invited guests, including friends and whānau, mingled and viewed the displays of art as well as the work of students from Food, Digital and Hard Materials Technology. The highlight of the evening was a fashion show of Year 10-13 Fabric Technology and Year 12-13 Fashion and Design student work.

The show was compèred by Savvy Marston and Ray Carr and was opened by Maya Goren dressed in her Wearable Art piece. She was followed by a selection of Year 10 students in their comfortable pyjamas and Year 11 students in their “casual wear”.

The Year 12 students highlighted the importance of sustainability in their garments which included repurposed items and fabrics.  Examples included garments made entirely from old denim jeans!

The Year 13 students wore the garments they created this year, based on their costume brief. They certainly took this to heart and created a range of inspiring and meaningful garments including cultural and historical costume pieces inspired by real and fictional characters.

Safe drop off/collection by vehicle

We received information from the Auckland Transport Community Transport Coordinator about a ‘bicycle accident vs car door’ on 20th October. The incident involved a cyclist and a caregiver dropping off a WGHS student in the transit lane (Southbound on Wairau Road, by Atlas Concrete). The cyclist hit the car door as the student opened it to exit the vehicle. The cyclist was taken to hospital in an ambulance and required surgery. Unfortunately, a similar accident happened outside Westlake Boys a few year ago.

This is a timely reminder of the risks involved of stopping in transit lanes or on broken yellow lines when dropping off at school. We recommend using one of the surrounded streets as a drop off/collection point. Smalls Farm does not allow parking for school drop off/collection and issues infringement tickets.

WGHS placed 2nd in the Auckland Secondary Schools competition with an incredible overall score of 479.55 points and a team consisting of Grace Campbell, Yana Fedorova, Grace Young, and Melody Choi.

Additionally, Yana Fedorova placed second overall in the Junior Girls event, and Grace Campbell placed first overall in the 15-16 years Girls event. What excellent results from the WGHS team!

All smiles as the Westlake Marching Team compete again

On 29 October, the Westlake Marching Team made a great start to the year in their first field day and competition. Following their success in the 2020-2021 season, and placing 4th nationally with their spectacular display, the members of the team were very excited to finally be able to compete again, following the cancellation of the previous season due to COVID restrictions.

“It was a great experience,” one of the members of the team commented,  “Nerves aside, I think we did the best we could, and our hard work paid off.”

The Westlake Marching team are continuing to train two evenings a week for the upcoming Regional Championships in Wellington in December.
