The last couple of weeks have been a whirl of activity, with this years very tight timeframe, and we have been enjoying celebrating the success of our students. The Sports Awards and the Music dinner have both been lovely occasions, made extra special after not being able to get together for some time. The number of students recognised, and the level to which they have achieved has been outstanding and we are very proud of them.

We are adjusting to being able to hold events on site now that we have our Events Centre. On Wednesday 2 November we have two awards ceremonies for our senior school. The first is our Special Awards Ceremony for our senior school, at 10am in the Westlake Girls High School event centre. This is to celebrate our non-Academic achievements, due to capacity, all Year 9 and 10 students and senior award winners are welcome to attend. We will also be streaming this at the following link for those of you who would like to join us virtually.

https://youtube.com/channel/UCjWPDAmRM-S56J6yJQK7Q_A/live

Year 9 and 10 students will be released at the conclusion of the event (approximately 12pm) for study leave. There will be no timetable classes for students on this day. If you require supervision for your daughter, please contact their Dean and they will arrange this.

In the evening, beginning at 7pm, we have our Senior Academic Prize-Giving, also at our event centre where parents and caregivers are welcome to attend. Other changes this year include a special assembly for our year 12 students, on Monday 31st October to announce the Prefects for 2023. A full list of events is listed under “Things to Note”.

We wish our Kapa Haka students all the best for the Ahurea festival which is being hosted by Westlake Boys this weekend. Our combined group will be performing at 8.00am on Saturday morning.

Silver Keys and Volante Strings Lunchtime Concert

This week, our development ensembles Silver Keys and Volante Strings held a lunchtime concert for their friends to share their work from the year. Silver Keys is a flute choir directed by the flute teacher Mary O’Brien and they rehearse one lunchtime a week. The students range in ability from beginners to advanced and are ably led by Holly Trent who helps organise rehearsals and helps players with their music. Volante Strings is run by violin teacher Alison Salmons and beginner string students learn how to play effectively within an ensemble. Congratulations to these music students for presenting an enjoyable concert!

Board of Trustees

The new board held their first full meeting on 27 September (after an induction meeting the week prior, to assist the board with understanding their roles and responsibilities). New parent-elected board members, Victoria Mahan and Sunny Patel; along with new staff representative Anna Cooper, and returning members Kim Tay and Russ Clements, were welcomed to the meeting. Joy Bradfield was re-elected the Presiding member (Chair) with Kim Tay, Deputy.

Thank you to all those who stood for election, it takes courage to put yourselves out there, we appreciate your willingness to serve our school and your ongoing support.

Our first meeting commenced with an excellent presentation from Shona McRae, HOD Social Sciences. The Social Sciences curriculum review covers Social Studies, Classical Studies, Geography and History. Shona provided the board with insight into the MOE’s curricular changes for the new Aotearoa New Zealand History curriculum for Year 9 and 10, and the refresh of Social Studies curriculum. Shona also presented an overview of the extensive co-curricular activities that her department is engaged in for the benefit of all students, with guest speakers and relevant activities during lunchbreaks and outside of school.

Dan Benadie then presented the annual AV/IT Risk Management and Cybersafety reports. This provided the board with an overall snapshot of the recent upgrades and modifications deployed to further enhance the school’s network performance, security, and infrastructure over the past 12 months. The school’s ICT infrastructure services over 2500 users and up to 8000 devices. The board is well aware of their legal responsibilities and the implications of cyber risk to the school and works with Dan, and external experts, to continue to build cyber competency and ensure the establishment of an effective school-wide cyber risk management framework. The report covered the school’s network and projects, backups and disaster recoveries, cyber security and safety, along with an AV update and proposed expenditure for 2023.

Deputy Principal, Paul Davis, who was in attendance as the Senior Leadership member for the above two portfolio areas, was able to present his Health and Safety report to the board in person. Paul prepares the Health and Safety report for each board meeting, and also leads a school Health and Safety meeting each term, with minutes provided to the board. Health and Safety is an important aspect of the board’s work, and the board thanked Paul for the work undertaken in preparing these comprehensive reports, and during the pandemic especially with regard to the ever changing MOE Covid protocols.

Aside from the regular board business, this was the last meeting for our outgoing student board member, Kate Liu. Kate has been an active member of the board providing valuable student voice during our meetings. We wish her well in her upcoming exams and her last year at school.

We will welcome our newly elected student board member, Jappan Kaur, at our next meeting on 15 November. The agenda for this meeting includes the draft budget for 2023, a tour of the school site, and a board update on all aspects of property management and planning, in preparation for the next 5 year property plan. Our Property Manager, Grant Brown, is retiring after 12 years at WGHS. He has overseen all our property projects, including the administration block, covered courts and the new event centre, and has been instrumental along with his committed team in ensuring our school property is always well maintained and fit for purpose. Grant has been an invaluable Property Manager and we wish him well in his retirement.

Please note that board meetings are open to the public and anyone is welcome to attend.

Rotary Interact Badge Ceremony

On September 30th, Rotary North Harbour and Rotary Takapuna North representatives visited our school to present badges to our Rotary Interact 2022 students. This was a wonderful opportunity for the group to celebrate our many achievements during the year. We are very grateful for the support that we receive from these local community groups.

Westlake Wellness - Positive Words

We all need encouragement and positive affirmation especially when facing challenges, sending your child off with words of support lets them know you believe in them regardless of the outcome and can make a world of difference to their mindset entering an assessment.

Many students will be either at the start of their NCEA examinations or in the case of our junior students about to start their school examinations. The results they achieve could impact future choices such as entry into specific Universities and courses, some examinations will be a reflection of a students understanding and for some students examinations will highlight the areas of their learning where they need more support. Whatever the outcome,  it is also important to recognise that examinations are one part of a student’s life, for a limited period of time and that many of our students are exceptional in other areas.

Below are some great words/phrases we can all use regularly to encourage and support the students in all they do:

  • You make me smile
  • I am so proud of the person you are
  • I will be thinking of you today…
  • I like how you…..
  • You can always talk to me, even if its about something that makes you feel nervous or sad
  • I love seeing the world through your eyes
  • Have a awesome day
  • Anytime you need help, I am here for you
  • I respect what you are saying…
  • Look at how much you have achieved already….
  • I love your laugh
  • I think you can handle it but I will be there if you need me…
  • Sometimes I will say no, but I will explain to you why…
  • I will do my best to keep you safe
  • You got this

Congratulations to Brooke James, World Champion Indoor Cricketeer

Westlake Girls top cricketeer, Brooke James, represented New Zealand at the World Under 22 Indoor Cricket Championship in Melbourne during the October school holidays and won gold.

In the preliminary rounds, the team had mixed results and beat South Africa in the semi-final, only to meet the confident Australian team in the final who they had lost to previously. Clearly the underdogs, New Zealand crept past the Aussies to win the final by one exciting run.

The Year 13 student had an outstanding tournament with the bat closing out most of the games.  However, it was with the ball that Brooke featured, finishing the event as the tournament’s top wicket-taker with 18 wickets.  Brooke was also named the player of the match in two matches and was selected for the World 8 tournament team.

Westlake Qualify for the Ki-O-Rahi National Championship

Students from Westlake Girls and Westlake Boys united for the Auckland Secondary Schools Ki-O-Rahi Championship played at Cornwall Park in Green last week and they excelled to qualify for the New Zealand Secondary Schools Championship in 2023. Only the top 3 teams were eligible to make the nationals and Westlake secured their spot by finishing 2nd.

Coached by the Head of P.E. at Westlake Girls, Kathleen Beckett, two senior mixed teams made their way through the preliminary rounds to both qualify for the tournament’s semi-finals. Westlake Green met Waiorea in the first semi and won 15-12 to make it into the final, while the second team, Westlake Red, met the regular champions, Nga Tapuwae and lost 6-11.

In the final, Westlake was outclassed by the team from Mangere, with Nga Tapuwae winning 21-6, however, their silver medal meant that Westlake was going to the national championship next year for the first time ever. Westlake Red lost to Hoani Waititi in the playoff for third and fourth going down 0-4.

The Successful Sporting Year that was

Lifting the Covid veil this year, saw a flurry of activity in 2022 as students returned to the playing arena with gusto and supporters followed closely into the stands. Thousands celebrated a return to regional and national tournaments and even more cheered as a larger number of athletes than normal, headed overseas wearing a silver fern to represent New Zealand on the world stage at Junior World Championships. The high calibre of talented athletes at Westlake Girls was noticed most at the annual Sport Excellence Prize-Giving in October where more than 100 awards were given to over 200 students in recognition for all the hard work and commitment they had shown their sports and school the season. Twenty-two Blues Awards, which recognise national champions and New Zealand under-age representatives, saluted some of the best young athletes in the country.

Double international and the 2022 Sportswoman of the year, Zoe Crawford highlighted this perfectly. Zoe is a member of the New Zealand Junior Swim team and the co-captain of the New Zealand Under 19 Surf Lifesaving team. Her achievements on the international stage were second to one, winning 4x silver medals at the World Youth Championships in Italy, Zoe won a team silver and 3 individual ones. But if that’s not enough, she is also a member of our Premier Hockey team.

The Team of the year award went to the Premier Basketball team, who were unbeaten as they collected the New Zealand Secondary Schools Championship trophy for the first time in the school’s history. Holly Williams maintained her commanding position as the school’s top All Rounder, leading the way for Rugby and Touch at school. Year 10 student, Emma-Kaye Schroeder was rewarded for her multi-talents, by receiving the Junior Sportswoman of the year award.

The seven targeted Sports, Basketball, Football, Hockey, Netball, Rowing, Rugby/Touch and Volleyball continue to be the most popular and talented codes in the school. Basketball and Rugby won their local competitions, Hockey, Volleyball and Touch finished 2nd. Football is determined to get back into the premier grade. Rowing medalled on every stage from Head of Harbour, North Island Secondary Schools to Maadi. Netball is still the largest participatory sport in the school with over 400 students putting on the red dress each week during winter and helping the school to an impressive 20 podium finishes across 22 junior and senior grades at North Harbour Netball.

Now as we move into summer, the juniors have our attention with their focus on Volleyball, Cricket, Athletics, Adventure Racing, Touch and now after qualifying for the 2023 National Championships for the first time, Ki-O-Rahi has become another summer favourite.

NZ Trio Concert

Somi Kim (alumna graduate, 2007) is the pianist in the NZ Trio and last Wednesday they visited Westlake to perform for the Year 10-13 music students. The trio (piano, violin and cello) are a professional chamber group and they played four contrasting pieces from different music periods and styles, both classical and contemporary. A highlight was a piece ‘Kintsugi’ by female NZ composer, Salina Fisher, who wrote the piece especially for the group. This musicians also answered questions from the floor and talked about their musical background and how they work as a team. It was really inspiring for our young musicians to hear a past student perform to such a high level and we hope they visit us again soon.

Year 11 Workforce Science Mangere Mountain Trip

On Thursday 29 September, 26 Year 11 Workforce Science students braved temperatures and pelting rain to travel up Māngere Mountain in support of the learning required for the achievement standard 90952: Science 1.13 “demonstrate understanding of formation of surface features.

To combine the science with the course’s workforce focus, students will complete a tourism resource (pamphlet, video tour, poster) to inform tourists of the amazing geological history of this wonderful place.

A particular highlight was climbing into the lava cave at Ambury Farm. It was a tight squeeze but we managed to get all 26 students and 5 adults into the cave!

Special thanks to Richard Carter, Sustainable School Advisor from the Environmental Services Unit of Auckland Council and Julian Thomson, MoE PLD Facilitator from Field-BasedSTEM in Wellington who accompanied us on the trip to share their expertise.
