Westlake girls set sail for Sydney

Sailing NZSS champs

Westlake Girls set sail for the New Zealand Secondary Schools Team Racing Championship at the end of the April School holidays, after winning the Auckland title a month earlier.

The young team led by New Zealand Youth Sailor, Daniella Wooldridge got off to a strong start in the week-long regatta, winning 6 out of 6 races on Day One to set up a commanding platform.  The most challenging race on the first day was against the defending Champions, Nelson Girls College however, it was Whangarei Girls who truly tested them, and narrowly beat them the next day on the Algies Bay course.

Westlake Girls held strong to fend off all challenges to win the Girls title and the honour to represent New Zealand at the Inter Dominion Secondary Schools Regatta against Australia in late September.  The Westlake crew of Daniella Wooldridge, Bella Jenkins, Gretel Satterthwaite, Jess Handley, Zara Latimer, Emma Reid, Danielle Robertson and Emily Turner are now in serious fundraising mode for the major regatta which will be hosted by the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron under the Sydney Harbour Bridge from 24 – 27 September.
