On 19–20 June, members of the Taharoto String Orchestra and Westlake Symphonic Band participated in a highly successful In-House Camp, filled with music-making, learning, and team building.
Under the direction of Joo Yeon Lee (Taharoto String Orchestra) and Jono Howan (Westlake Symphonic Band), students engaged in a range of intensive rehearsal sessions, including full ensemble rehearsals, sectionals, and workshops led by professional mentors from the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra. These sessions provided valuable opportunities for students to refine their ensemble skills and develop greater confidence as performers.
A special highlight of the camp was working with guest composer David Hamilton on Takahe Trot, a work written specifically for the Taharoto String Orchestra. Students gained unique insight into the composer’s creative process and the inspiration behind the piece, making the experience both educational and inspiring.
Throughout the camp, students focused on developing important instrumental and ensemble techniques, including bowings, fingerings, tone production, articulation, and effective communication within their sections and across the ensemble. Their commitment and hard work resulted in significant musical growth over the two days.
In addition to the rehearsal programme, students participated in a variety of team-building activities and games, strengthening friendships and fostering a positive and supportive ensemble culture.
The camp concluded with a Parent Concert, where students showcased the repertoire and skills they had developed throughout the camp. It was a wonderful opportunity for families to celebrate the students’ dedication and achievements.
We extend our sincere thanks to our APO mentors, David Hamilton, staff, and parents for their support in making this camp such a rewarding and memorable experience for our young musicians.
