In Week 6, Amnesty Club’s annual Freedom Challenge Week took place. This year, the primary focus was on human rights issues in the Philippines. Through the Freedom Challenge Week activities, we aimed to highlight the need for the protection of Philippine human rights defenders, as well as to celebrate the country’s vibrant culture. The Amnesty Club leaders, alongside Ms Brown, Ms Wilson, and Ms Villaruel, organised three key events: a general meeting, a guest speaker event, and a cultural Filipino performance.
The week kicked off with a meeting for all Amnesty members. Students gained an insight into human rights issues in the Philippines, and the winners of the poster competition were announced. Congratulations to Year 10 Student Ysabelle Gazzingan for creating an amazing poster, and to everyone else who submitted. The following day, we were fortunate to have Fritzi and Romy Udanga as guest speakers. They gave a highly informative insight into human rights issues in the Philippines. On Friday, the Freedom Challenge Week concluded with a cultural performance by members of the Westlake Pinoy Night, which was a great way to celebrate Filipino culture at our school.
Thank you to everyone who got involved and made the Freedom Challenge a successful event.
