Cantare Takes the Stage for a Powerful Performance of Britten’s War Requiem

Britten War Reqiuem

It’s not every day you get to perform alongside 300 singers and musicians in one of the most demanding choral works ever written!

Over the final weekend of the school holidays, our Cantare choir joined Auckland Choral, the Auckland Youth Choir and Pipers Sinfonietta at Auckland Town Hall for a performance of Benjamin Britten’s War Requiem.

Rarely performed because of its sheer scale, the work brings together traditional requiem texts and the poetry of World War I soldier Wilfred Owen. Cantare’s role was particularly moving, representing angels and the innocent young lives lost to war.

And our girls certainly made an impression!

In his review for the New Zealand Herald, music critic William Dart singled out Cantare, praising their ability to navigate “perilous melodic journeys with fearless precision and clarity.”

There was also a familiar face among the professional soloists, with Cantare’s singing teacher, James Harrison, performing the baritone solo.

For our singers, performing such a challenging work alongside professional musicians, in front of a full Auckland Town Hall, was an opportunity to put years of practice and dedication into action.

Congratulations to Cantare on a performance they can be very proud of!
