Year 9 STEAM students stepped into the role of biomedical engineers during a hands-on Robogals workshop, designing and testing their own working stethoscopes using everyday materials.
Using balloons and paper-towel tubes, students explored how the heart functions, why a heartbeat produces sound and how medical professionals monitor cardiac health.
Once their stethoscopes were assembled, the students listened to heartbeats and breathing before measuring how their heart rates changed after exercise. They then refined their designs to improve the quality of the sound — putting the engineering process of building, testing and adapting into practice.
The workshop gave students an engaging, real-world demonstration of how science and engineering work together to improve human health.
