Auckland Rowing Championships

After a long summer of work, the Westlake Girls rowing squad began their competitive racing season at the Auckland Rowing Championships (Head of Harbour) on Saturday 4th of March. With excellent on water conditions the squad performed extremely well, earning six first, five second & three third place finishes.

Westlake Girls medalled in all three of the premier sweeping events on the program – the girls U182- (bronze), 184+ (gold) and U18 8+ (silver).  Our squad also managed to earn first place finishes in 4 of 5 four oar events on the program. Claiming gold in the girls U154+, U164+, U184+ and U18 Novice 4+

Gu178+ on their way to a Silver Medal

The highlight for the day was of course a tightly fought battle in the girls u188+. Our crew ably lead by coxswain Tessa Guthrie finished second in a tight race between Westlake Girls &  Baradene College, with the race being so close not even the crew themselves knew where they had finished until the official result was provided. This marks the fifth consecutive year Westlake Girls has medalled in the Gu18 8+ at Auckland Championships. Making us the only school to medal in the event every year of the 5 past season and marking our longest streak of success in the event.

The squad now turns their attention to North Island Secondary Schools and Maadi Cup held in March at Lake Karapiro.
