From the Principal

Kia ora parents and caregivers,

With two weeks of term under our belt, the school is starting to find its natural rhythm, and our new students are settling into life as Westlakers. Those first-day nerves are being replaced with new friendships, new experiences and an excitement for the academic, extra-curricular and social opportunities that are opening up before them.

The start of a new school year always brings fresh hope and anticipation, and this year is no exception.

Despite the disruptions of last year, we are delighted with the academic achievement across our school. Our 2020 provisional results, released by NZQA, show our Excellence Endorsements at every level are higher than 2019, and well above the rates for female students in Decile 8-10 schools.

Provisional results show pass rates at each level are as follows:

Level 1: 94.4%
Level 2 and Level 3: 96.1%
University Entrance: 88.9%

We also performed very well in Scholarship exams with 73 scholarships awarded to 54 students. This is a wonderful result and I am very proud of everyone who worked so hard to achieve this success.

On Thursday we held our full-school academic assembly where we recognised our top performing students of 2020, and presented our 2021 Prefects and Tuakana with their badges. It was a special occasion to meet together under one roof, celebrating the achievements of so many students. You can read more about the assembly in this newsletter.

Over the next few weeks our clubs and committees will be forming, and our website is currently brimming with sports registration opportunities. You can keep an eye on the Daily Notices (details under “Things to Note” in this newsletter) if you’d like to see what’s coming up.

We also have our Clubs Expo at lunchtime this coming Tuesday, 16 February, where your daughter can find out about the 30+ clubs we have on offer. Students can wander around the different stalls and talk to students and staff who are running the clubs to find out more information or sign up.

Whatever she daughter enjoys, I’m certain there will be opportunities for her to develop and growth her strengths this year.
