Moira de Villiers (now Moira Koster) is one of New Zealand’s most experienced and successful judo athletes – a two-time Olympian and two-time Commonwealth Games medallist. She is competing in the U70kg event at the Glasgow Games.
She had the honour of leading the New Zealand athletes out at the opening ceremony of the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, carrying the ceremonial King’s Baton, alongside flag-bearer David Liti.
Moira first represented New Zealand at the London Olympics in 2012 and competed again in Paris in 2024. She won a silver medal in the women’s U70kg division in 2014 at Glasgow, and a bronze in the U78kg in 2022, in Birmingham.
Moira was in the Westlake Girls Class of 2007, winning secondary school and national titles during her school years, including the New Zealand U70 Championship and a bronze medal in the Pacific Rim Championship in Taiwan, in her final year at school.
She is based in Christchurch, where she combines elite sport with family life and involvement in the judo community.
It is a testament to the depth of her commitment to the sport and her successful international career that she was chosen to lead the team out in Glasgow.
