From the Principal

Acting Principal's Welcome

Dear Parents and Whānau,

You will have received a letter from Jane Stanley last Friday sharing our latest Education Review Office (ERO) report.

The report beautifully highlights the high levels of achievement, progress, and wellbeing across our school, alongside the exceptional quality of our leadership, teaching, curriculum, and student support systems. It also explicitly recognises the inclusive culture that ensures our students feel deeply connected, supported, and ready to thrive.

You may notice that this report looks quite different from previous years. ERO has introduced a new reporting format designed to be more accessible and easier for families and communities to understand. We warmly welcome this change, as it provides a much clearer picture of school performance and our ongoing improvement priorities.

On Wednesday the 24th of June, myself and fellow Associate Principal Nicky Whitham-Blackwell, along with presiding member of the board of trustees Jason Britten, attended the inaugural New Zealand Education Excellence Awards at Parliament as a finalist in the category of Excellence in Educational Leadership. We were thrilled to come away as the winner in the secondary school section, which is an acknowledgement of all the incredible work that occurs daily throughout our school community.

L-R: Acting Principal David Burton, Associate Principal Nicky Whitham-Blackwell, Board Chair Jason Britten

We are absolutely delighted by this honour, particularly as it coincides with our ERO report, which rated our school leadership as ‘Excelling’ (among many other top categories).

Meanwhile, our busy, vibrant school life continues. We have an especially rich cultural week ahead, with both our Indian and Chinese Nights taking place:

  • Indian Night: Tonight, Friday 26 June
  • Chinese Night: Hosted at the Westlake Boys’ School Auditorium on Friday 3 July

If you haven’t attended one of these events before, I heartily recommend securing tickets. Both are incredibly fun, energetic occasions, and it is a privilege to see our students celebrating their heritage with such joy and pride.

As this is the final newsletter for the term, I wish you all a wonderful, relaxing weekend ahead and end to the term.

Ngā manaakitanga,

David Burton

The Big Sing Regionals

This year’s Auckland Regionals of the NZCF The Big Sing was a monumental choral showcase, bringing together a record 85 choirs from 54 high schools across the city and further afield. Over four days of competition, there were plenty of standout performances, but the most rewarding aspect of this event is seeing young people present their unique voices, build their confidence, and express themselves within such an encouraging choral community.

We are incredibly proud of all our Westlake choirs, our outstanding music team and we appreciate the ongoing support of the Board and our school community. These achievements belong to our entire choral whānau:

Cantare: (Music Director Fiona Wilson)

Excellent Recital Programme by an Upper Voice Choir

Adjudicator’s Award for Excellent Performance of a Single Piece: Suscepit Israel by J S Bach, featuring Alison Dunlop on oboe.

Choralation (Music Director Fiona Wilson)

Excellent Recital Programme by a Mixed Choir

Nota Bella (Music Director Elise Bradley)

Excellent Recital Programme by a Junior Choir.

Excellent Performance of a NZ or Pasifika Work (choir not selected for National Finale for past 2 years): Tūi Canon by Takerei Komene.

Congrats to our brother school, Westlake Boys, for Voicemale’s award of Excellent Recital Programme by a Lower Voice Choir.

We are excited to announce that Cantare and Choralation have been selected for the next round of competition in August for the National Finale, held in Christchurch; and Nota Bella have been selected for Cadenza Festival, held in Rotorua. Congratulations to all our Westlake Choristers!

Young Swans Overcome Visitors From Adelaide

The Cygnet Year 10 Netball class came together as a team yesterday to take on Adelaide’s Seymour College in a netball exchange at St Cuthbert’s School.

The Young Swans, comprising the school’s top Year 10 netballers from Premier 1, Premier 2, and Year 10 teams, struggled to find their rhythm in the opening half. Seymour College capitalised on their opportunities to take a 14–8 lead into the halftime break.

The Swans responded strongly in the third quarter, lifting their intensity and teamwork to level the scores at 17–17 and set up a thrilling final 10 minutes.

Seymour College with Cygnet Year 10

Seymour College, a private girls’ school with a roll of just under 1,000 students, showed composure in the closing stages despite the Swans’ spirited comeback.  Westlake Girls won the exchange 24–20.

Board Meeting Summary Report

For 18 June 2026

Quick Note

The Board’s role is governance rather than day-to-day school operations. This means the Board focuses on setting the school’s strategic direction, policies, and long-term priorities,  while operational matters such as managing school facilities are handled by the Property Team and the Student Council.

ERO Review

Every four years, the Education Review Office (ERO) reviews and reports on outcomes for students, school conditions, and steps for school improvement. The recent ERO report confirms that Westlake Girls’ High School continues to achieve strong outcomes for learners and maintains high levels of student achievement.

Overall, ERO found that the school is well placed to sustain positive outcomes and continue enhancing learning opportunities for all students.

The ERO ‘Snapshot’ shows that Westlake Girls’ High School is performing very strongly overall, with ‘Excelling’ grades in areas such as student achievement, progress, literacy and numeracy, curriculum, and assessment. Students are achieving highly, making strong progress, and being well supported to access a wide range of learning pathways and opportunities.

The report also notes positive support for engagement, belonging, equality, and additional learning needs, with targeted help in places and improvements being made in attendance.

Westlake Girls’ High School Indoor Courts

The Westlake Girls’ High School Board is currently exploring the possibility of developing a new indoor court facility through a school-community partnership. There is currently strong demand for additional indoor court space across the North Shore, particularly for volleyball, basketball and futsal, and identified WGHS as a suitable location due to its accessibility to Smales Farm Bus Station and our existing sporting facilities. The proposal aimed to increase opportunities for students while also providing community access outside school hours. The project is intended to support both school and community sport and strengthen connections between the school and the wider North Shore community.

Application for Excellence in Educational Leadership

As part of our Application for Excellence in Educational Leadership, the Board has reflected on the positive impact of school-wide initiatives designed to strengthen student engagement, belonging, and success. A key outcome has been the development of the Student Growth Profile, which helps students understand their learning journey, leadership opportunities, and future pathways from Year 9-13. These initiatives have also contributed to strong academic outcomes, including excellent NCEA and University Entrance results, improved literacy and numeracy achievement, and New Zealand Scholarship success. Together, these outcomes demonstrate our commitment to creating an environment where every student feels supported to grow, achieve, and thrive.

Challenge Success Survey

Results from the Challenge Success Survey show positive improvements in student engagement, belonging, and support across the school. Between 2024 and 2026, the proportion of students who reported feeling a sense of belonging increased from 47% to 57%, while those who identified having a trusted adult at school increased from 55% to 65%. In 2026, 50% of students were either fully engaged (23%) or purposefully engaged (27%) in their learning, while only 7% reported being disengaged. These results reflect the impact of initiatives focused on strengthening student wellbeing, connection, and confidence, helping more students feel supported and engaged in their learning journey.

Draft Livestreaming and Broadcast Guidelines

The Board carefully considered the proposal to livestream basketball and netball, with student wellbeing, privacy, and safety remaining its highest priorities. Concerns were raised about parental consent, access and control of livestream links, potential privacy breaches, and the increased exposure of students, particularly in junior teams. While recognising that livestreaming can improve accessibility for families, the Board agreed there is currently no compelling reason to allow livestreaming of netball and basketball and supported an opt-in approach for any future consideration. The Board has asked for a formal livestreaming policy to be developed to ensure any future decisions prioritise the protection, dignity, and best interests of students.

An urgent summons from Lady Cygnet

The moment has arrived, dear readers.

The most eligible bachelor our small village has ever seen arrives on the 21st of July.  With £10,000 a year Mr Darcy is sure to catch the eye of the Bennet family, but what will the clever and witty Miss Elizabeth Bennet make of him?

We are embarking on a fast-paced journey through Jane Austen’s beloved classic, and quite frankly, the neighborhood is already in an uproar. I am reliably informed that the evening will be positively packed with sharp banter, utter family chaos, and some of the most embarrassing proposals it has ever been my misfortune to witness.

Do secure your invitations to the Westlake Production of Pride and Prejudice immediately. It would be dreadfully shocking if you were left out of the season’s most talked-about affair.

Yours with immense distinction,

Lady Cygnet

It feels amazing to be a finalist. I’ve worked really hard throughout the season, so it’s exciting to have that effort recognised. I’m proud to represent my club, Mairangi Bay, and grateful for all the support I’ve received along the way. – Dallas Fulton (pictured below).

“I was really surprised and honoured to be nominated for this award. I’ve enjoyed being part of Surf Lifesaving and learning from my coaches and teammates. I’m grateful for the support of my family, friends, and club and I’m proud to represent Muriwai.” – Charlotte McIntyre.

Safe Driving and Parking at Smales Farm

We are very fortunate to share our local environment with the vibrant business community at Smales Farm. To keep everyone safe and maintain great relationships with our neighbours, we need to ask for your cooperation regarding driving and parking around the precinct.

  • Lane Safety: There have been several reports of unsafe and erratic driving through the Smales Farm laneways. While this may involve students from multiple local schools, please talk to your teens about driving with extra care, patience, and awareness through these busy zones.

  • Reserved Parking: A reminder that tenant and visitor parking spaces within Smales Farm are strictly reserved. Please do not use these parks during peak morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up times, even if it is just for a ‘quick moment’.

  • Keeping Interactions Positive: When local tenants politely ask drivers to move from these reserved spaces, we want to ensure conversations remain courteous and respectful.

Please ensure you are only using designated public parking or public drop-off zones. Thank you for helping us keep the roads safe for everyone and for being considerate neighbours!

Showquest 2026: A Spectacular Success!

What an absolutely fun, excitement-filled day our students had at Showquest 2026!

After weeks of incredibly hard work bringing their creative vision to life, our talented students took to the stage with their original performance, Symphony of Everyday Sounds.

Inspired by the idea of unplugging from our headphones and truly appreciating the vibrant world of sound around us, the performance was both thought-provoking and high-energy.

Our school walked away with two awards:

  • Award for Recognition in Music
  • Award for Recognition in Culture
Eva Makarova Paton

A massive thank you to all the students, staff, and families who poured their time, energy, and passion into this year’s performance. You represented our school beautifully!

We are so incredibly proud of what this group achieved, and we already can’t wait to be a part of Showquest again next year. Bring on 2027!

Wearable Art TOI competition

TOI is the official wearable art showcase produced in collaboration with the world-renowned World of WearableArt (WOW) and nationwide youth performing arts programme Showquest.

A big congratulations to the five students who were selected from around 200 Auckland students to compete in the Show Quest, Wearable Art TOI competition at the Aotea Centre. The two student groups designed and made garments following the ‘Depths and Heights’ brief. Eva and Zara explored the mysteries of the ocean and Xavi, Hadia and Laana created a garment looking at the vastness of space.

Senior Treble Voices Festival – 2 July, 7.30 pm

Wrap up warm and join us for a spectacular evening of choral music at the Westlake Girls High School Events Centre on Thursday, 2 July 2026 at 7.30 pm. The Senior Treble Voices Festival is proud to present ‘Mid-Winter Christmas Capers’, offering a fun take on a snowy Christmas during a New Zealand winter with a uniquely Kiwi twist. 250 young treble singers from nine different choirs will be gathering for an afternoon of collaborative rehearsals and workshops before presenting this fantastic public showcase.

The performance spotlights each choir showcasing pieces from their own distinct repertoires. Audiences will enjoy individual sets from Cantare and Cigno Voce from Westlake Girls High School, Aria and Voce Castello from Macleans College, The Leona Ensemble from Takapuna Grammar School, Serenata from Rangitoto College, Capriccio from Carmel College, and Stella Voce from Long Bay College.

We are also deeply honoured to introduce our international guests, the Gondwana Indigenous Children’s Choir from Cairns, Queensland. As Australia’s celebrated national ensemble of young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander performers, they will share their own exceptional repertoire, weaving First Nations languages and stories into choral arrangements.

The evening culminates in a grand finale as all the choirs unite on stage to sing spectacular massed items together. These combined pieces will be brought to life by our legendary guest conductors – world-renowned conductor of the Gondwana Indigenous Children’s Choir, Lyn Williams AM, and acclaimed local choral clinician Dr. Karen Grylls ONZM.

Don’t miss this powerful celebration of festive joy and cross-cultural friendships brought to you through choral music!

Westlake Girls GymSport Team Shines at Auckland Championships

On Thursday 11 June, our Westlake Girls GymSport team proudly represented the school at the Auckland Secondary Schools GymSports Championships, held at Bruce Pulman Recreation Centre. Taking a team of nine dedicated athletes from Years 9–13, the day was a fantastic reflection of both talent and team spirit.

From the moment competition began, our athletes demonstrated not only their skill and preparation but also their resilience and composure under pressure. Across both rhythmic and artistic disciplines, each gymnast performed with confidence and determination, doing themselves and Westlake Girls proud.

What stood out most throughout the day was the strong sense of camaraderie within the team. Whether competing on the floor or cheering enthusiastically from the sidelines, our athletes showed unwavering support for one another, creating a positive and encouraging environment that lifted everyone’s performance.

Their hard work was rewarded with an impressive medal haul, with the team bringing home five podium finishes:

  • Athen Li1st Place, Rhythmic Senior Internationals
  • Adele Northin1st Place, Rhythmic Opens
  • Taylor Christie2nd Place, Artistic GFA 5 & 6
  • Ward Helal2nd Place, Artistic Women’s Step 5
  • Rose Dagger3rd Place, Rhythmic National Level 8

These results are a testament to the dedication, discipline, and commitment each gymnast has shown in their training. Achieving success at this level requires not only technical excellence but also mental focus and perseverance—qualities our athletes displayed in abundance.

We are incredibly proud of all nine gymnasts who represented Westlake Girls so admirably. Every member of the team contributed to the day’s success, whether through competition results or the support they provided to their teammates.

A huge congratulations to our medal winners and to the entire team for an outstanding performance. We look forward to seeing these athletes continue to grow and succeed in future competitions.

Auckland All-Girls Jazz Festival - This Weekend

To celebrate and elevate the role of young women in music, Westlake Girls High School is proud to introduce the inaugural All-Girls Jazz Festival – a dedicated two-day event designed to foster confidence, collaboration, and community within the jazz genre. We have recognised how valuable it is to provide specific opportunities for young women to engage in jazz, a space that can often feel quite male-dominated. This year we have invited three other all-girls schools to join us for a cross-school Jazz Band festival – Baradene College, Epsom Girls Grammar, and St Cuthbert’s College.

After two days of workshops with guest clinicians, Lana Law, Paul Norman, and Eddie Hare, the four school bands will be presenting a public concert to showcase all their work. Come join us in the WGHS Events Centre on 28 June, 4pm, for a fantastic afternoon of jazz! All ages welcome. Entry by koha.
