Mathex is a challenging and fast-paced mathematics contest where schools from across Auckland compete against each other in teams to answer questions as quickly as possible. 

This year’s event was an action-packed evening on Wednesday, 23 August, at Barfoot and Thompson Stadium, Kohimarama. 

“Mathex was a really fun experience for me. I was able to fully immerse myself in problem-solving. I also enjoyed training with my friends every Thursday at lunchtime, and the teachers were so kind and supportive. I will definitely miss Mathex!”

“After almost two terms of preparation, it was finally time to put our skills to the test in the 2023 Junior Mathex competition. The countdown began, and the hall erupted with chaos. Pandemonium filled the space as each team worked strenuously to solve the problems. It was a battle of mathematical wits against time as we all clamoured to answer the questions as speedily as possible. Tireless runners sprinted across the hall, sometimes bringing back the celebration of another correct answer and other times bringing back questions that proved more challenging. As the questions progressed, they grew more demanding, forcing us to think creatively and use our collective knowledge to find a solution. As the night drew to a close, the winners were announced, and whilst we were not amongst them, we enjoyed ourselves thoroughly. We proudly represented Westlake and brought home memories of a thrilling evening.”
